Frederick Morris Martin was born on 02 October 1923 , the son of J and M Martin. In 1947 he married Cicely Frances Brown and had one son and two daughters. He was educated at London elementary and secondary schools, going on to study at Birkbeck College, University of London. He graduated in 1949 with First Class Honours in Psychology with Sociology.
